Summer is in full swing! Hopefully, you are enjoying a little relaxation and fun in the sun, but keep in mind your hair may not care to be as much of a beach bum as you are! Your hair is an extension of your body and just like you take care of your body, you must take care of your hair. From the sun’s rays to crazy atmospheric conditions, the world around you is not so helpful in maintaining a healthy head of hair! The web can be overwhelming with tips and product recommendations so we decided to keep it simple. Along with a little advice from famed celebrity stylist John-Francis Maseda, here are our top three summer hair care tips to battle the heat and keep your beautiful locks on track…
#1 Defy The Sun
The sun’s rays are probably the most important thing to protect your hair from. Ultraviolet light from these rays can break apart the pigment in your hair causing color fading and lasting damage. The most effective thing you can do avoid damage is to cover your hair completely if you plan to be exposed to direct sunlight for any length of time. Thankfully, beautiful scarves and fun, floppy hats are in style! From fedoras to pashminas, you CAN protect your tresses and be fashion forward at the same time.
If you are going to be out in the sun for a while and do not want to cover your hair, comb a leave-in conditioner through your hair for a sleek yet protected look. You can slick your conditioned hair into a sleek ponytail to ensure none of your scalp is exposed. “Try a slick braid for added style,” says John-Francis. “The fishtail braid is my favorite!”
Some women make the mistake of putting some type of oil on their tresses thinking they are fully protected. “Oil + heat from the sun = cooking,” advises John-Francis, “and cooking is NOT good for your hair!” Our scalp and hairlines are often overlooked when it comes to sun protection. Protect your scalp too by applying sunscreen to any part in your hair or try a powder sunscreen that can be sprinkled onto the scalp. Don’t forget to apply a good sunblock along your hairline either. Remember, a healthy scalp means healthy hair!
#2 Be Picky With Your Products
During the summer season we are tempted to over-wash our hair due to excess sweat and grime. This means washing more often than we shouldand over-shampooing when we do wash, leaving our tresses dry and brittle before we even go outside! Try to wash every two or three days and when you do wash, use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo. You can rinse your hair between wash days or utilize a dry shampoo to soak up access oil and add some volume to your locks.
You don’t even have to sacrifice suitcase space on your vacation when it comes to proper summer hair care thanks to these handy travel sized products.
#3 Hydrate Your Body AND Your Hair
Proper hydration is key to a healthier you and a healthier head of hair year-round, but especially during the hot summer months. In addition to drinking a minimum of eight glasses of water per day, give your hair a coldwater rinse after washing, and treat your tresses once a week with a deep conditioningproduct that moisturizes and restores the hair, better preparing it to face the heat.
BONUS TIP!
While it is important to maintain a healthy hair routine year-round, it becomes even more important during the harsh summer months. In addition to our top three tips, remember to get your mane trimmed and treated regularly at the salon, even if you are growing your hair out. Trimming the damaged ends off on a regular basis will help you keep the shiny, healthy hair look you love throughout all seasons. “While scissors are the best conditioner, if your ends aren’t overly damaged, ask your stylist to dust the length every other cut and simply reshape the layers on the other,” says John-Francis.
