I believe it’s very important to establish a relationship with your stylist. After all, you are a walking advertisement for their work. Ideally, they do their best and you walk out of the salon looking and feeling stunning. Nowadays, everyone seems to be looking for the best bargain. While you may pay top dollar for a fancy pair of jeans, somehow ladies tend to skimp on what really matters most…their appearance. If you have bad hair, no one is checking out your Hudson Jeans. While you may try to save money by chair-hopping, you are subjecting your hair to an array of cuts and/or chemicals which may not be best suited for you. Selecting a new look is not as easy as flipping through the latest tabloid. Look in the mirror: Examine your natural skin tone, eye color and hair color. What’s your makeup style? What about your personal/fashion style and preferred colors? What’s your lifestyle? All these pay a big role in what looks you can and should wear. Here’s a peek at some of my favorite color and style work for your inspiration…
Julia, Color Correction – Lots of women wish to be blonde and end up bl’orange. Clearly, her before picture shows prevailing orange, gold and yellow tones. All of which look very unnatural and do not match her skin tone. Julia’s goal was a soft ‘Jennifer Aniston blonde. I absolutely agreed! We proceeded with a full foil highlight, taking fine sections to compliment her dense hair. The remaining hair was deepened to match her natural color. Once the highlight was processed, we toned it with a very light natural/ash blonde to create a soft look. The final look is not only stunning but completely natural. I guarantee it will look great even in a few months!
Renee, Color Correction – Renee’s case was a true hair emergency. I’ve done a lot of correction work but this takes the cake. Renee had visited her usual salon in SF the day before and…Oh my! Bleeds, splotches, over-highlighted, discoloration, banding – it was all over her entire head. Tragic. I literally reconstructed her entire color: highlights, lowlights with a dash of toner. Presto! She exclaimed, “It’s not only better than before, it’s better than it’s ever been!” My job is done.
Danielle, Creative Color/Technicolor Dream Hair – For Danielle…I was given full creative freedom. In addition to her day job, she is also a DJ. Before heading out to spin some tunes at Burning Man, she wanted a unique and colorful hair look. The entire front section was pre-lightened to create a blank canvas. (She doesn’t color the rest.) I took fine slices and colored them silver/blue. Remaining hair was colored ‘free-hand’ using Magenta, Peach, Pink and Yellow tones fading into one another. I dubbed this bold ‘Burner Chic’ look ‘Technicolor Dream Hair’!
Sara, Creative Color/Missoni Hair Design – Sara recently took over ownership of Sweet 9 Salon. After years of growing her hair out, she was bored and desired a chic new look to celebrate her new position. First, we cut her hair into a shattered Bob. For the color, I pre-lightened three foil sections (along the front) in a zig-zag pattern inspired by Missoni. Remaining hair was colored a rich, dark espresso brown. Once this processed, I applied Teal, Magenta, Blue, Purple, Silver, Green, Yellow and Orange on the pre-lightened zig-zag pattern. Our results were shimmery, iridescent hair with a lots of versatility.
Kim Before:
Kim After:Kim, Makeover/Moiré FX Hair Color Design – In physics, a moiré pattern ( /mwɑrˈeɪ/; French: [mwaʁe]) is an interference pattern created, for example, when two grids are overlaid at an angle, or when they have slightly different mesh sizes. The placement of my Moiré FX design was inspired by the alignment of ancient sites.
First, I pre-lightened all of Kim’s hair and, boy, did she have some hair. Hair was then toned with a very light ash blonde to create a pearly shade. Then, we pre-cut her hair into an asymmetric Bob. Her hair was the foiled at 45 degrees starting along the front toward the back left-side. Then back up along the right side toward the front. Shading used was a progression of light/med natural/ash blonde, medium golden brown to a deep, dark espresso black. Moving beyond traditional foil placement, the result was a bold, versatile design. This design can also be used with subtle color choices to create a fresh, long-lasting dynamic look.
