5 Must-Know Tips for Caring for Naturally Curly Hair

Curl Problems

The curly hair dilemma. You either LOVE it or you hate it!!! Curly hair is both a blessing and a curse. It’s a blessing because it’s quite lovely and a curse because it is generally accompanied by frizz.
The major culprits that contribute to the dreaded frizz are dehydration and friction. Unfortunately, curly hair is naturally dry. The first line of defense is to hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Using the wrong products can cause potentially luscious locks to become parched. Dry, thirsty hair will reach upward and outward to try and quench its thirst from moisure in the air which causes it to become big and frizzy.
Friction is another no-no for curly locks. If you have lived with curls your whole life, you know that the more you touch your hair, the more frizz you create. There are other sources of friction that you probably don’t realize you are creating, however. Eliminating some of these sources will result in smoother curls. So without further ado, here are five major habits to adopt that will fully transform your hair and take those curls from frizzy to fabulous in no time.
Must Know Tips for Caring for Naturally Curly Hair
1. Use only sulfate-free shampoos
What are sulfates? Sulfates create suds. They are found in detergents, oven cleaners, engine de-greasers and sadly, in most shampoos. Sulfates are very effective for cutting grease but are too harsh for curly hair because they strip it of lubrication. Invest in a moisturizing, sulfate-free shampoo and cleanse your scalp in circular motions. Do not scrub your hair, concentrate only on your scalp. As the shampoo runs through your curls during your rinse, that will be enough to cleanse your midshaft and ends.
2. Detangle curls with conditioner in the shower
After cleansing your hair, apply conditioner. Leave it in while you take the rest of your shower, shave your legs, exfoliate, etc. Before you rinse, comb through your hair with with your fingers or a wide tooth comb. This way, you will not tug roughly on the hair and break it. After you have conditioned and detangled, stand upright under the shower head and allow the stream of water to flow through your hair and rinse out the conditioner.
3. NEVER use a terrycloth towel to dry your hair
Use a microfiber towel (or even a t-shirt) to dry your precious curls. Terry cloth towels act like velcro and really rough up the cuticle. Instead of vigorously rubbing to remove moisture from your hair, gently scrunch sections of hair with the microfiber towel in an upward motion, blotting the water into the towel. This way, you are drying and helping to coax your curls at the same time.
4. Sleep on a satin or sateen pillowcase
If you own flannel pillowcases, please give them to a friend or Goodwill! Tossing and turning at night in your sleep in unavoidable. The smoother your pillowcase is, the less friction you are creating and the prettier your curls will be.
5. Get your hair cut by a stylist who specializes in cutting curly hair
There is a revolution happening in the curly hair world. Deva Curl and Ouidad are the two leading companies that specialize in curly hair care. There are now (finally!) independent classes for stylists to take so that they can learn how to cut curly locks. Cosmetology schools do not teach this and as a result, unless stylists pursue this type of education on their own, the chances of them NOT knowing the proper way to cut natural curls is extremely high. Do your homework. Go to  www.naturallycurly.com for tips and recommendations. You can also find curly hairstylists at www.ouidad.com and www.mydevacurl.com.
The days of not knowing how to care for your curls are finally over! The curl revolution is here. Start researching and find out more ways to rock your gorgeous, natural curls. Find the right stylist and throw out those sulfate shampoos and rough pillow cases. Treat yourself and your tresses to a microfiber towel. You are the caretaker of a gift. The gift of curls. Set them free and hold your head high. You are beautiful!

Going Out? Glam Up Your Long Hair With One Of These Styles!

If you’re like me and desperately need a change, glam up your tresses with one of these chic hairstyles, perfect for a fancy dinner or night out on the town with your girls.

1. THE ROMANTIC PIN-BACK

pinned back long hairstyle
1. Start by applying a thickening product, like Bumble and Bumble Prep, throughout your tresses.
2. Using a round brush blow-dry the ends of your hair under and create a side part down the middle of your scalp.
3. Apply a dime-size amount of finishing product, like the SILK Protein Treatment from Salon Grafix, to the ends of your hair, working your way up to your scalp. Be careful not to apply too much product though as your roots tend to be much oiler than your ends. A little should go a long way!
4. Next, grab a 2-inch section of hair from each side of your head (near your temples) and brush until smooth.
5. Loosely twirl the strands until they resemble ribbons.
6. Finally, pull back both sections of hair and secure them with your chicest clip near the center of your head.

2. A SLEEK, CENTER PART BEND

long hairstyle with center part
1. To give your locks a soft, airy shine, apply a product like Prive Weightless Amplifier from the roots to the ends on damp hair.
2. Part your hair in the center, and using a medium-sized, round bore bristle brush, blow dry your strands sleek and straight.
3. Take large sections of your hair and wrap them around a 1 ½” barrel curling iron just once at the mid-shaft, leaving out your ends. You don’t want a strong wave or curl, just a slight bend.
4. Lastly, create shine and smooth flyaways at your crown with Prive Flash Brilliance, and gently brush your hair from roots to ends to finish off the look.

3. SULTRY WAVES

wavy long hair style
1. Before you do anything, apply a heat-protecting product like Alterna Bamboo Smooth Anti-Breakage Thermal Protectant Spray throughout your hair, from scalp to ends.
2. Start this style by using a mousse or a volumizing foam, such as Salon Grafix Instant Volume Spray Foam, throughout your hair (especially at your roots).
3. Position your head upside down, and proceed to blow dry your tresses towards the ground. Gravity should do the rest!
4. Using large, heated rollers, gently roll medium-sized sections of your hair underneath and secure the rollers with heatproof clips. Allow at least 5-10 minutes for your curls to take shape before removing them.
5. Remove your rollers and brush out the loose curls to create soft, subtle waves. Be careful not to over-brush though.
6. Last but not least, apply a shine serum to the ends of your hair and you’re ready to hit the town in style!

How To Style:
Start with clean dry hair with a base product already in your hair. Such as styling lotion or thickening spray. Set your hair with hot rollers, or a curling iron.
This is to create the volume at the top of your hair and the sleek waves in the pony. Section off the very top and front of your hair in a horse shoe pattern and tie up the top so that it is seperate from the bottom.
Backcomb , hairspray, and smooth the sides of your hair. Take the ends of the section of hair you backcombed from the top of your head, and twist or braidinto a half inch section. Then add it into the pony so it creates a geometric design and line on the back of the head.
Gently pull all your hair softly back and off to the side into a soft side pony. You can then use a cute whimsical hair tie or a piece of hair to cover any type of hair band you may have used to secure your hair.
You can do this by taking the hair and wrapping it around the base of the pony as if it were a ribbon to cover any hair ties and make the style appear more finished.

How To Style:
Start with clean dry hair with a base product already in your hair. Such as styling lotion or thickening spray. Section off the top, and front of your hair, from the back of your hair.
Backcomb the section of hair at your crown heavily, smooth with a brush and roll under and pin into a “bump” and then hairspray. Smooth your fringe off to the side, so that they lay sleek.
Now take the remainder of the hair and softly twist or use a large braid on each side of your head. Then pull back and secure each section at the sides to the back of the head with bobby pins or a hair tie.
At this point you need to decide what side you want your ponytail to lay on. Softly twist or braid the section of hair you have secured at the back and center of your head. Securely pull everything off to the side and secure tightly with a hair tie.
Take a medium width strand of hair and cover the hair tie by wrapping it around and pinning with a bobby pin. Brush the pony smooth and simply tie it into a knot. Insert hair pins to secure and hairspray heavily.
